We had left Base Camp earlier in the morning and arrived as a huge weather squall was heading in from the direction of the Antarctic.

We parked the car and it hit – a wind that belonged in a cyclone or hurricane and rain that flew horizontally. Our senses were overwhelmed by the power of nature. Here we were, watching a spectacular weather event … and we felt very small and very fortunate that we were in a 4 wheel drive and not a rent a bubble!

Take my advice – hire a good care if you are a free wheelin’ Bob Dylan – you will get so much more out of The Catlins if you have a decent set of wheels.

The area is home to Hector's Dolphin, and Southern Right Whales have also been seen offshore.
