Curio Bay ( Map reference no 4)

Curio Bay on the Catlins Coast is one of the geological wonders of the world. This petrified forest of subtropical kauri and other trees dates back to the Jurassic age, 135 to 190 million years ago.

Curio Bay and Porpoise Bay are situated on the Catlins coast, about 88 kms south-east of Invercargill and 7 kms south of Waikawa.

It is signposted from the Southern Scenic Route, which follows State Highway 92 through the Catlins from Invercargill to Balclutha.

The fossilised remains of an ancient forest is exposed at Curio Bay during low tide. It stretches about 20 kms from Curio.
